Emilia Nercissians has authored a new book entitled as Anthropology of
Education in which she brings about an interdisciplinary study of
anthropology and linguistics of the history and sociology of Armenian
language.
IBNA: The book begins with the formation of the language and its
impact on the educational societies of Armenians under the Ataman
dynasty in the 19 and 20th centuries.
Speaking with IBNA, Emilia Nercissians stated that the book is a
library-based interdisciplinary research work in assessment of
educational, linguistic and sociological foundation stones of the
language in the Armenian community.
As she said, the book reflects on the language in the Ataman Armenian
society in the century of 19 and 20, and casts light on how the
language was formed.
She went on to say that the Armenian society was void of any central
government to program and pursue education of their language
systematically. However, Armenian elites and wits managed to come up
with a standardized educational system for the language and teach it
to the illiterate.
Under the Ataman empire, most Armenians were farmers whose language
was divided into eastern and western Armenian.
Another form of the language was the classical Armenian (or the
Grabar) which was very difficult to learn and was mostly used for
writing. Because Grabar was used mostly by the ruling party in the
Armenian society, common people failed to communicate with the
language extension; therefore Ashkharhabar replace Grabar so far as it
was much easier to understand and learn for the common people. A part
of the book deals with formation of Ashkharhabar.
The book would be of the most interest for Iranian-Armenians who speak
eastern Armenian and Armenian historians who might find interest in
reading about the history of the language and its formation through an
anthropological and educational perspective, she went on to add.
Some of the book's chapters are: the language of masses, language and
identity, emergence of Ashkharhabar, historical research tools,
linguistic and sociological approaches, common and educational
vernacular, historical background, social developments and their
impact on language, and Armenians' movement under the Ataman empire.
Born in 1953, Emilia Nercissians holds a PhD in educational sociology
from the American Century University. She is an associate professor at
Tehran University and has so far written a number of books in her
field of study.
Arranged in 243 pages, her Anthropology of Education has been
published by Afkar Publishing Company in Iran.
