Clouds are gathering over a presidential candidate, writes the
Zhoghovurd newspaper about Vardan Sedrakyan, contending that the
epic poetry expert turned politician now linked to suspects in an
assassination attack on a rival may also face money laundering charges.
"His transition from a modest to a luxurious lifestyle with expensive
cars could not have escaped the attention of law-enforcement bodies,"
writes the opposition-leaning paper.
"With two of his neighbors arrested in connection with the shooting
of presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan, Sedrakyan himself will be
summoned to Armenia's National Security Service (NSS) for questioning.
Law-enforcement bodies are most of all interested in the sources of
the candidate's financing and therefore he will have to introduce
the necessary documents. It is not ruled out that he may be accused
of money laundering," it adds.
Sedrakyan, who has been boasting of his financial independence
and showing off his garage of posh cars, spent Tuesday denying any
involvement in the shooting attack on opposition candidate Paruyr
Hayrikyan after the two suspects in the case arrested by the NSS turned
out to be people formally employed by him. The maverick candidate
predicted his arrest after the February 18 election, insisting that if
so, it would be an instance of framing him up in the high-profile case.
