On February 13 the Vice President of the National Assembly Eduard
Sharmazanov met with the Ioannis Tayis, Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Greece to the Republic of Armenia.
The NA Vice President and the Ambassador of Greece discussed issues
concerning the procedure of the presidential elections to be held
in Armenia. In particular, Eduard Sharmazanov has stressed that it's
important for the Armenians authorities to hold democratic elections in
accordance with European standards. According to him, the pre-election
campaign is competitive, and unlike the previous elections it mainly
goes on ideological and program basis, almost lacks personal offense
and political nihilism. The NA Vice President has assured that a
big opportunity is created for Armenia to make democratic elections
invariable, and with this respect he has highlighted the operative
and objective response of the competent bodies on violations.
According to the assessment of Ioannis Tayis, Ambassador Extraordinary
and Plenipotentiary of Greece, these elections look like a station,
where Armenia's democratic values will become clear. To his conviction,
the steps taken by the authorities in organizing democratic elections
have been right and better than the previous ones. Regarding the
complaints, they are not serious and cannot have an impact either
on the procedure of the elections or on the elections. At the same
time he has noticed that during the pre-election period there have
been complaints in all countries of the world: it's important that
the relevant bodies quickly respond to them to prevent possible
violations. The Ambassador has expressed hope that with these elections
Armenia will once again prove that its initiated reforms are on the
right path.
In the course of the meeting they also discussed issues concerning
the development of the inter-parliamentary relations. The Ambassador
of Greece handed over to Eduard Sharmazanov the letter of the members
of Greece-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, where they inform
him about their kind acceptance of the invitation of the Head of
Armenia-Greece Friendship Group Eduard Sharmazanov to visit Armenia
and the proposal to hold joint sittings of the Friendship Groups.
