GEORGIAN INCUMBENT AUTHORITIES DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE RE- OPENING OF ABKHAZIAN RAILWAY: SERGEY MARKEDONOV
10:30, 20 February, 2013
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 20, ARMENPRESS: As long as dual power established
in Georgia maintains no clear progress should be expected regarding
the opening of Abkhazian section of the railway linking Russia and
Georgia to Armenia.
"We should not ignore the position of Azerbaijan regarding the issue,
Tbilisi should also keep this fact in the focus of attention: Mikheil
Saakashvili and Bidzina Ivanishvili must also observe cautioness. Both
sides abstain to undertake abrupt steps" Sergey Markedonov Russian
political scientist, expert at the Center for Strategic and
International Studies (CSIS) told in the briefing with Armenpress.
Expert also hinted that "Abkhazian" side has been somehow sank into
oblivion. In the opinion of Markedonov no matter Abkhazia is not a
world leading power country, yet nothing can be changed without its
position. "Reportedly they are against the reopening of the railway,
they are afraid this will pave the way for Georgians to return. Thus
the reopening is beneficial in one hand, in the other hand there are
factors that keep back its implementation" expert underscored.
Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili in the course of the
joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Tigran Sargsyan
dwelled on possibility of railway's operation and its profitableness
to Georgian side. Abkhazian section of Georgian-Russian railway has
not been operating for twenty years due to Georgian-Abkhazian conflict.
