YEREVAN. - The Armenian party is not placing a sufficient attention
on conveying to the international community the truth about the
events that occurred in Sumgait, Azerbaijan, 25 years ago. This was
stated during Wednesday's joint news conference by Hrayr Ulubabyan-the
co-author of the book entitled Sumgait... Genocide... Glasnost...-and
Constitutional Court adviser, and law specialist, Gevorg Danielyan.
Ulubabyan noted that the Armenian pogroms in Sumgait were a
continuation of the Pan-Turkish policy of "Armenia without Armenians,"
and these events were preceded by numerous Armenian genocides in
different years. He also noted that, prior to the Sovietization of
Transcaucasia, there was no "Azerbaijani" nation.
"I am from Nagorno-Karabakh. No one [there] had ever said
'Azerbaijani;' they said, 'Turks.' And the mater of returning
Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia's makeup was raised numerous times, but the
central [Soviet] authorities suppressed these intentions," he said,
and added that the Karabakh movement started against the backdrop of
former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's policies of "perestroika"
(restructuring) and "glasnost" (openness).
Ulubabyan also recorded that the authorities of Armenia are not placing
a sufficient attention on conveying to the international community
the truth about the Armenian pogroms in Sumgait. In his words,
the Armenian authorities have passed but one respective document,
which just condemns these tragic events.
According to the experts, however, the mass killings of the Armenians
in Sumgait meet the definition of genocide.
