ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT OPPOSES ESTABLISHING REUNIFICATION DAY WITH KARABAKH HOLIDAY

YEREVAN. - The Government of Armenia is against the proposal to set
December 1 as a Reunification Day holiday.
MPs Khosrov Harutyunyan, Artashes Geghamyan, and Hayk Babukhanyan
have proposed a bill to mark December 1 as Reunification Day because
during their joint session that was convened on December 1, 1989, the
Supreme Council of Armenia and the National Council of Artsakh-that is,
Karabakh-had declared the reunification of Armenian SSR and Artsakh.
The Armenian MFA, however, has prepared a negative conclusion with
respect to this bill, and this conclusion is submitted for approval
during Thursday's Cabinet meting. Pursuant to the conclusion,
if this bill is passed, Azerbaijan will use it as an additional
argument to substantiate its deconstructive position, and it will
present the Karabakh issue not as a conflict between self-determined
Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan, but rather as a territorial dispute
between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
