Serzh Sargsyan, as a presidential candidate, can be said to be have
suffered an ideological defeat, with the socialist forces being unable
to fight the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), a socialist
politician has said.
"Serzh Sargsyan suffered a defeat because the socialists in Armenia
cannot afford to fight the RPA with money. We find that the sum
collected through our members - 32,000 US Dollars - will be spent
uselessly," the leader of the socialist movement Essence of Time,
Robert Aharonyan, told a news conference on Thursday.
Aharonyan, who had earlier declared his plan to run for election and
later gave up the idea, said instead of holding elections it might as
well be enough to check how much a candidate has. "Why not restrict
elections to a wallet and thus decide who the winner is?" he said
But in the meantime, Aharonyan warned that such efforts will not put
an end to their struggle. "We will struggle for not only nominating
[a candidate] in the elections, but also a victory. We will also
head to the National Assembly elections and all the other polls,"
Aharonyan added.
Asked which candidate they are going to support in the upcoming
presidential election, the politician said they still have to consider
the issue. "We will say in just a couple of days who we are going to
back, but that will be the person who profoundly leads us towards
Russia," he said, adding that it is the people's desire to pursue
the path to socialism.
