The Jan 17 visit of Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili to
Armenia will mark a new stage in Armenian-Georgian relations, Deputy
Director of the Caucasus Institute, political scientist Sergey Minasyan
told journalists on Tuesday.
"The visit is crucial for not only bilateral relations but also for
the general situation in the region. Now that Ivanishvili is going to
revise Georgia's relations with Russia, the Georgians may raise their
ties with Russia's strategic partner Armenia to a new qualitative
level," Minasyan said.
On the other hand, according to the expert, Georgian-Azeri relations
are worsening. One proof is the recent report in the Azeri mass media
quoting Georgian Patriarch Ilia II as saying that Georgia supports
Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict - an allegation that has
been disproved by the Georgians.
