YEREVAN. - Armenians should build the foreign policy based on the
Armenian identity, taking into account that the country is also a
Middle Eastern one, expert for Turkish studies Ruben Safrastyan said
at a press conference on Tuesday.
"We should not be limited to only borders of the South Caucasus,
we should take an active part in political processes ongoing in the
Middle East," he said.
Armenia needs to run a wider policy he said asked about choosing
between the EU and the Eurasian union. As a result, Armenia will
improve its credit in the international arena and make a choice coming
from the national interests.
"At the moment Russia is ensuring the security of the country. Armenia
should intensify cooperation with the CSTO, which is the only military
support against the external threats. As for the U.S., it has military
obligations only to Turkey. At the same time Armenia has no alternative
to Russia, the CSTO and the Eurasian Union," Safrastyan concluded.
