** A Tour of Western Armenian Literature
    ------------------------------------------------------------

On Saturday, January 12, Columbia University graduate student Jennifer
Manoukian gave a presentation on Armenian literature to students of
the Diocese's Khrimian Lyceum. She traced the history of Armenian
literature through the life and works of Zabel Yessayan, one of the
foremost writers in the Western Armenian literary tradition. The talk
concluded with an overview of today's revival of translations from
    Western Armenian.

Yessayan, whose eventful life coincided with major periods in Armenian
history, provided insight into each period of Western Armenian
literature, including Constantinople during the `cultural
reawakening,' Paris during the Hamidian massacres, Constantinople
during the Constitutional Revolution and Young Turk regime, Paris in
the 1920s, and Soviet Armenia during the Stalinist era.

Other authors discussed included Bedros Tourian, Serpouhi Dussap,
Krikor Zohrab, Hagop Baronian, Archag Tchobanian, Yervant Odian,
Taniel Varoujan, Siamanto, Roupen Sevag, Shahan Shahnour, Nigoghos
Sarafian, Vazken Shoushanian, Vahan Totovents, and Kourken
