** St. James Brotherhood Meets in Jerusalem
------------------------------------------------------------
Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian traveled to Jerusalem
this week to attend a meeting of the St. James Brotherhood, as it
prepares to hold an election for a new Armenian Patriarch of
Jerusalem.
Archbishop Aris Shirvanian, the Locum Tenens of the Armenian
Patriarchate, has been leading the effort to organize the patriarchal
election which will choose a successor to the late Archbishop Torkom
Manoogian, who passed away in October.

Prime Minister of Georgia meets with His Holiness Karekin II
Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili greets His Holiness
Karekin II.
** Georgian Prime Minister Visits Holy Etchmiadzin
------------------------------------------------------------
At Holy Etchmiadzin on Thursday, January 17, His Holiness Karekin II,
the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, met with
Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. His Holiness expressed
his hope that Mr. Ivanishvili's visit will help enhance the diplomatic
ties between Armenia and Georgia.
The Catholicos also stressed the importance of restoring and
preserving Armenian holy sites in Georgia, and returning ownership of
several Armenian churches located in Georgia to the country's Armenian
Diocese. In addition, he pressed the Georgian government to release
the imprisoned activist Vahagn Chakhalyan and to permit Armenian
schools in Georgia to teach Armenian history.

Homeblessing
** Primate Visits New York Area Schools and Old Age Homes
------------------------------------------------------------
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan Primate, visited local Armenian
schools and homes for the elderly this week. These included the Holy
Martyrs Armenian Day School in Bayside, NY, and the New York Armenian
Home in Flushing, NY, on Monday, January 14; and the Hovnanian School
in New Milford, NJ, and the Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
in Emerson, NJ, on Tuesday, January 15.
As part of each visit, the Primate officiated over the Home Blessing
service, which is traditionally performed at the start of the new
year. At the Holy Martyrs and Hovnanian schools, students sang
Armenian songs and recited poems. They also had a chance to learn more
about the Home Blessing service and to ask Archbishop Barsamian
questions about the Armenian Church.
At the New York Armenian Home and the Armenian Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center, residents received communion and heard a
message from the Primate on the importance of faith in daily life.
Accompanying Archbishop Barsamian to the Hovnanian School and the
Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center were the Very
Rev. Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian, Rev. Fr. Diran Bohajian, Rev. Fr. Arakel
Vardazaryan, Dn. Hacik Sariminasyan, Dn. Benjamin Rith-Najarian, and
Dn. Sebuh Oscherician. Accompanying Archbishop Barsamian to the Holy
Martyrs Day School and the New York Armenian Home were Fr. Abraham

Teachers from schools in Shirak and Aragatsotn attend an IT course led
by GTech.
** FAR Helps Armenia's Teachers Build Computer Skills
------------------------------------------------------------
The Fund for Armenian Relief's Gyumri Information Technology Center
organized an IT training course for 30 teachers representing schools
in Armenia's Shirak and Aragatsotn provinces.
The course, held in November and December of 2012, was part of a
larger GTech initiative to help school teachers develop computer
literacy. The initiative is made possible with the support of the
Armenian Educational Foundation

During a visit to St. David Church of Boca Raton, FL, last weekend,
Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian met with members of the
parish's Diocesan Assembly committee to discuss plans for the 2013
Clergy Conference and Diocesan Assembly. The annual meeting of
Diocesan clergy and delegates will be hosted by St. David Church from
April 29 to May 5.
On Sunday, January 13, Archbishop Barsamian celebrated the Divine
Liturgy, with the Very Rev. Fr. Nareg Berberian, parish pastor,
assisting. Later in the afternoon, the Primate presided over a
luncheon.

St. Sahag Church of St. Paul, MN, has launched a new parish website:

The new site includes features on parish history, parish news, and a
calendar of parish events, among other items. The parish has also
begun the publication of a weekly e-bulletin. Parishioners may

Khrimian Lyceum
Students of the Diocese's Khrimian Lyceum listen to a presentation on
Western Armenian literature.
** A Tour of Western Armenian Literature
------------------------------------------------------------
On Saturday, January 12, Columbia University graduate student Jennifer
Manoukian gave a presentation on Armenian literature to students of
the Diocese's Khrimian Lyceum. She traced the history of Armenian
literature through the life and works of Zabel Yessayan, one of the
foremost writers in the Western Armenian literary tradition. The talk
concluded with an overview of today's revival of translations from
Western Armenian.
Yessayan, whose eventful life coincided with major periods in Armenian
history, provided insight into each period of Western Armenian
literature, including Constantinople during the `cultural
reawakening,' Paris during the Hamidian massacres, Constantinople
during the Constitutional Revolution and Young Turk regime, Paris in
the 1920s, and Soviet Armenia during the Stalinist era.
Other authors discussed included Bedros Tourian, Serpouhi Dussap,
Krikor Zohrab, Hagop Baronian, Archag Tchobanian, Yervant Odian,
Taniel Varoujan, Siamanto, Roupen Sevag, Shahan Shahnour, Nigoghos
Sarafian, Vazken Shoushanian, Vahan Totovents, and Kourken

curriculum includes units on creative writing, music, singing,
theatre, dance, art, as well as educational excursions and guest

The ACYOA Central Council has announced that the 2013 Armenia Service
Program is scheduled for July 1-20.
The program of travel and service gives young adults (ages 18 to 28) a
unique opportunity to discover their homeland and to serve its people
in a meaningful way. In 2013, the service component of the trip will
be carried out in partnership with the Fund for Armenian Relief and
the Fuller Center for Housing.
