  • Entertainment: Rick Mercer crashes Sabian cymbal factory

    Mercer crashes Sabian cymbal factory

Rick Mercer rocked out with the Trews for a segment that will appear
in the upcoming episode of CBC-TV's The Rick Mercer Report, a
collaboration that was taped during a November concert at The
    Playhouse in Fredericton.

The Newfoundland-born comedian also takes the time to shine a national
spotlight on a hidden New Brunswick gem - the world-renowned Sabian
cymbal factory, which churns out high-quality cymbals along the banks
of the St. John River in Meductic that are used by drummers across the
    globe.

"It's stunning. Probably the nicest view from any factory in North
America, I would hazard a guess," said the popular political satirist.

In an episode of The Rick Mercer Report scheduled to air Tuesday at 8
p.m. on CBC, the affable TV host takes Sean Dalton, hard-rocking
drummer for Nova Scotia rock band the Trews, to the Sabian factory for
    a fun-filled tour.

"Anyone who knows anything about drumming knows that there's only two
names in cymbals in the world - Sabian and Zildjian. And it's the same
family, the same people. For me, it's fascinating that this happens in
Meductic," he said, noting that often these types of facilities are
located in the midst of an urban landscape.

"Growing up in Newfoundland, nothing was ever manufactured there and
certainly nothing that was, like, world class. We had natural
resources. But I just find it fascinating that it happens in Canada,
let alone a place like Meductic. It's just so interesting," he said.

"There's a whole community there that relies on this cymbal factory.
The cymbals are beautiful. And while parts of it are very high tech,
parts of it are exactly the way it was done hundreds of years ago in
    an Armenian village."

Mercer said he and Dalton were able to make a set of cymbals from scratch.
