ARMENIAN KIDNAPPED IN DAMASCUS

YEREVAN, JANUARY 25, ARMENPRESS. An Armenian was kidnapped in the
periphery of the capital of Syria, Danascus. Our compatriot living
in Damascus Nazareth Elmajyan stated this in a conversation with
"Armenpress". In addition he noted that the accident happened on
January 23. According to him the kidnapped Armenian was Nazareth
Charkyan. Armed people kidnapped him from his workplace and presently
they demand a ransom of 50 million Syrian liras to release him. This
amount of money equals to approximately USD 500, 000.
In the words of our compatriot the clashes in capital Damascus are
mostly orchestrated in the suburbs, especially in Ghutay district. The
overall situation in the city remains the same, the markets are
crowded. Syrian SANA news agency informs the armed forces have
seriously damaged rebels in the nearby areas of Darya, Harasta and
Duma villages, their weapons have been destroyed. Government forces
have recovered the route taking from Zamalka to Aaarabin.
In accordance with UN data more than 60 thousand people were killed
during 22 months lasting clashes in Syria, including four dozen
Armenians. The cases of kidnapped Syrian Armenians have become oftener
due to ongoing clashes.
