The Turkey-based Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK) organized on
Sunday a protest march in Istanbul's Samatya district to protest the
violence against the Armenian women.
According to the Agos weekly, the crowd marched to the district's
central square.
The Turkish MPs Sebahat Tuncel and Ertugrul Kurkcu, as well as Khosrov
Dink (the brother of the assassinated editor-in-chief of Agos, Hrant
Dink) and the Armenian community activist, Garo Paylan attended the
procession, carrying posters with the slogans "We are with Armenians;
We will Ban Racism".
Most Samatya residents lit candles to by windows to extend support
to the protesters. The crowd lay flowers in front of the apartment
block where Maritsa Kucuk, the ethnic Armenian woman brutally killed
in her house, lived.
In a speech delivered at the meeting, Kurkcu, who is a member of the
Turkish parliament's Human Rights Investigation Committee, said the
assaults were motivated by ethnic discrimination policies.
Tuncel accused the government of the continuing crimes. He said
particularly that the slogan "One Nation, One Language, One Religion"
created a breeding ground for the "hatred language".
The Turkish activist Ahmet Saymadi said the assaults, committed ahead
of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, are very much like
each other
"Muammer Guler, whose negligence caused Hrant Dink's death, becomes
an interior minister. Are Guler's policemen now supposed to resolve
Maritsa Kucuk's murder? What about these accidental bullets and
coinciding murders? Are they going to target only the Armenians,"
he asked.
