OVERCROWDING IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM OF ARMENIAN PRISONS - OMBUDSMAN
July 04, 2013 | 14:06
YEREVAN. - Armenian Ombudsman said prison overcrowding remains the
biggest problem of the Armenian penitentiaries.
Despite all speculations about existing problems, inmates are sleeping
in turns, Karen Andreasyan said as he summed up his visit to Nubarashen
prison together with UK Ambassador Katherine Leach.
"The smell, poverty and other things are horrible, but this cannot
be compared to sleeping in turns. It is inhuman approach," he said
during the press conference.
Overall, Ombudsman noted three main problems: the first is the lack of
sufficient finding of penitentiaries, the second is corruption. The
third main problem, which is often silenced, is the law of criminal
world inherited form the Soviet Union and spreading to the society
and the army.
Karen Andreasyan said he would present a report on the issue this fall.
