AZERBAIJAN IS RUNNING A MILITARY EXERCISE WITHIN GUNSHOT OF YEREVAN;
Azerbaijani political scientist: Baku is sending a geopolitical
message to its enemies.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited Baku, Azerbaijan. He
met with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mamedjarov and President
Ilham Aliyev. The Azerbaijani-Turkish military exercise kicked off...
to be run in the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic right near the
border with Armenia. Azerbaijani political scientists call it a
message to Yerevan.
Official purpose of Davutoglu's visit was defined as furtherance of
contacts between the two sisterly nations. Some analysts, however,
chose to read between the lines. They attributed the visit to the
processes taking place in the region.
Considering that Baku and Ankara usually operate as a team in
international affairs, it is hardly surprising that they have things
to discuss and common positions to work out. Local analysts pointed
out that Davutoglu came to Baku simultaneously with the launch of a
join military exercise. The exercise was launched in a solemn ceremony
on the premises of the Garagebeit training center of the Azerbaijani
Armed Forces... but it would be run mostly in Nakhichevan. Speaking at
the ceremony, Major General Eivaz Jafarov of the Main Directorate of
Operations said that the exercise to be launched became a corollary
of the decisions made by national leaders. He called the exercise
an important factor from the standpoint of regional security and
Azerbaijan-Turkish coordinated actions.
It was announced as well that analogous exercises would be run on an
annual basis, one year in Azerbaijan and the next in Turkey.
This exercise will be run in Baku but mostly in Nakhichevan. The
Azerbaijani regular army is represented by a motorized infantry
brigade, the Turkish by a company. The exercise will end on July 28.
Some political scientists perceive the Azerbaijani-Turkish exercise
as reaction to the military exercises Armenia regularly organizes
both on its own territory and the occupied Azerbaijani lands. The
joint exercise is to be run within gunshot of Yerevan, the capital of
Armenia. Azerbaijani political scientist Vafa Guluzade said, "Had the
Turks stayed on in Nakhichevan, it would have been great. In fact,
this turn of events will promote strategic interests of Turkey and
Azerbaijan... This exercise is an important geopolitical message to
Azerbaijani enemies."
