ARMENIA IS BECOMING AN ATLANTIC STATE
Armenia and the European Union completed the negotiations on the
Association Agreement and a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area.
This was stated by the EU officials Ashton and Fule who said they
were delighted about this and promised that the European integration
will have a positive impact on the lives of Armenian citizens.
The completion of negotiations implies publication of the text of the
Agreement. It has not been unveiled so far because it was not agreed.
Now it is interesting to know what the problem was and how they
managed to overcome it.
The main condition put forth by Armenia to the European Union was
the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border. Serzh Sargsyan stated
this in Warsaw and Chisinau. Does completion of negotiations mean
that the EU committed to forcing Turkey to open the border? This is
quite possible against the ongoing events in the region which are
not favorable for Turkey. No accident ex-speaker of the Armenian
parliament Samvel Nikoyan said yesterday that the association with
the EU may help lift the blockade of Armenia.
The second issue is the new role of NATO in the region. NATO is the
guarantor of security in the Euro-Atlantic area, while Armenia,
after association with Europe, will become part of it. No doubt,
NATO's role in Armenia will increase, and this is, apparently, set
down in the Agreement.
Russian political scientist Alexander Krilov affirms that the EU will
make Armenia review its relations with Russia and decrease the level.
First of all, he means Armenia's commitments within CSTO.
Strengthening of NATO in Armenia will definitely lead to clarification
of Armenia's role in CSTO. As a result, Armenia may become a platform
for cooperation between two military blocs.
Initialing of the agreement between the EU and Armenia is scheduled on
November 29. This day may become the beginning of the reformation of
the region. In Russia they have come to terms with this fact because
they have no alternative: any resistance will eventually repel Armenia
from Russia.
