FOREIGN MINISTRY: ARMENIA'S LIBERATION OF OCCUPIED AZERBAIJANI TERRITORIES WILL MOVE CONFLICT SETTLEMENT OFF DEAD CENTER

Armenia must first withdraw its armed forces from the occupied
Azerbaijani lands to move the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement off
dead center, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said at
a meeting with a delegation headed by EU Special Representative for
the South Caucasus Philippe Lefort, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry
reported today.
Mammadyarov spoke about the current state of negotiations on the
Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict settlement, recent meetings and once
again informed EU officials about Azerbaijan's position related to
the prospects for just settlement of the conflict.
It was stressed at the meeting that the Armenian-Azerbaijani
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement will contribute to the development
of the entire region.
Philippe Lefort informed about his recent visit to the region and
his meetings with officials.
EU Special Representative stressed that the EU is interested in
developing the region and maintaining the stability.
According to him, the EU attaches great importance to the development
of cooperation with Azerbaijan in bilateral format in various fields.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. are
currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
