YEREVAN, JUNE 4, ARMENPRESS: Josh Taylor, the light-welterweight
from Edinburgh who competed at the London Olympics, bowed out of the
European Amateur Championships in Minsk, Belarus, yesterday after a
2-1 defeat by Armen Zakaryan of Armenia, reports Armenpress referring
to Herald Scotland.
Liverpool's Sam Maxwell was victorious at the same weight and moved to
within one more win of a guaranteed medal. The 24-year-old produced
a polished performance to beat Italy's former Olympic and world
bronze medallist Vincenzo Mangiacapre via a split decision after
three tight rounds.
Ireland's Joe Ward, the reigning champion, suffered a dislocated
kneecap 20 seconds from the end of his light-heavyweight bout against
Mateusz Tryc, of Poland, having been in control and heading for
victory before the injury left him unable to continue.
Another Irish reigning champion, the light-welterweight Ray Moylette,
lost on a unanimous verdict to Turkey's Huseyin Karslioglu.
