ARG SHOULD BE NATIONALIZED
Interview with Silva Adamyan, coordinator of Civil Ecological Alliance,
member of Let's Prevent Gas Price Increase civil initiative
What steps have you made in regard to the gas price increase and what
steps are you planning now?
Since the society is the last to learn this kind of news, it is more
complicated to react. Our first step was to demand a public hearing
but our voice was not heard. We decided to attend parliamentary
discussions. Five representatives of our group were invited to the
parliament but their seats were behind the glass wall so they could
listen but not speak. So they left.
On May 29, a discussion was held at the Public Services Regulatory
Commission. It was necessary to apply to the commission beforehand
to have the permission to attend it. We didn't know about it so we
missed it. Our goal is to have the voice of the public audible, to
demand a justification for the gas price increase because there is
no agreement that defines the gas price increase.
How long have you worked at ARG?
I have worked there since 2005. I worked with the public and saw the
difficulty with which they pay for gas.
ARG had a serious internal issue of gas losses. We knew where gas
was lost: in the houses of the rich people who don't want to pay
or pay partially. The rich own different facilities where they use
gas illegally and the money they paid for it goes to the pockets of
several people not to the budget of the company. In order to fill
the budget gaps the company decided to cut salaries of inspectors.
ARG is unable to pay salaries, it is unable to pay taxes. Where does
the money go? Who gets rich on the company's expense? Who builds
restaurants and runs businesses abroad?
Is the Let's prevent gas price increase initiative going to put forth
the issue of nationalization of ARG?
All strategic facilities should be nationalized, this is my personal
opinion, ArmenTel, ARG, Electric Networks, mines etc. The state should
have profit from such organizations. Russia has even privatized the
gas pipes. We are going to put forth the issue of nationalization,
at beginning of the ARG, then with the other strategic facilities.
