A closer look at Shushi Dance Organization
By Vartan Abdo, Director of Armenian Radio Hour of NJ
The long term success of the Shushi Dance Ensemble lies in a simple reality.
When Seta Kantardjian started the group she did not have to, she wanted to.
There is a big difference between having to do something and wanting to do
something. That choice of wanting to do it gave Shushi Dance Ensemble the
long-term focus and enabled them to come this far.
In every instance where one finds a long-term view operating in our
community life, there is a long-term vision at work a vision of choice.
Building an organization is like growing a tree; it takes twenty-five to
fifty years. It took equal amount of time for Seta Kantardjian to lay the
foundation of the Shushi Dance Ensemble and make it the organization it is
today.
The benefits and rewards of the Shushi Organization is visible on stage as
well as off the stage. It is priceless to see the children of all ages on
stage, dancing with pride and joy, dressed in colorful costumes with
traditional and modern Armenian songs in the background. On countless
occasions we have observed parents and family members watch their loved
one's performance with tears of joy.
How about off the stage? It is equally uplifting to see the commitment and
dedication of parents working within the organization. As a result of these
contacts a bond has been formed among parents- a strong bond indeed. Parents
are as excited to spend time with each other as are their children with
other children. Equally interesting is that most of the parents are heavily
involved with the Armenian community at large.
What if we had no Shushi Dance Ensemble? Well, the fact is that we have Seta
and Shushi - all we need to do is appreciate and strengthen the Shushi
Organization.
The latest gathering which Shushi Dance Ensemble held at the Abajian Hall of
St. Leon Armenian Church on Saturday, May 18th, 2013, brought all the above
mentioned dynamics together. A cycle has been completed. We now see mothers,
former members of Shushi, stepping forward as parents and ensuring their
children get a taste of Armenian dance, culture and camaraderie within the
Shushi Family.
What an inspiring success story. All we need to do is see what has been
accomplished and work together to ensure the longevity of the Shushi Dance
Ensemble.
