Azerbaijan's gas supply offer was response to Armenia, says expert

An analyst of a leading Armenian research center has commented on the
Azerbaijani state oil company chief's statement expressing the
country's readiness to supply natural gas to Armenia in case of being
asked to.
Speaking to Tert.am, Head of the Armenian Center for National and
International Studies Manvel Sargsyan said he thinks the move is
Azerbaijan's response to the Armenian president's recent statement
predicting Azerbaijan's `inevitable fiasco' in just a couple of years.
`It was just a couple of days ago Serzh Sargsyan addressed
Azerbaijan's future, [saying that] we all will see it turn into a
bankrupt country soon. So the people say `you are the bankrupts',' the
expert said.
Days after the Armenian leader's speech at the National Security
Council, President of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani
Republic (SOCAR) Rovnaz Mamedov said the country can meet Armenia's
natural gas demand in case of receiving such a request.
`Azerbaijan is a humanitarian country and realizes its role of a
leader of the region. If Armenia applies to us for settling its gas
issue we will certainly help,' he said.
The expert added that he doesn't see any logic behind either
statement, noting that only an extreme degree of uncertainty can
prompt such measures.
He said he doesn't remember the topic ever being addressed in the
course of the Armenian- Azerbaijani negotiations over
Nagorno-Karabakh. As for the hypothesis Azerbaijan is indirectly
offering a `gas alternative' to Armenia, Sargsyan said he doesn't
think it a justified scenario.
He said further the West-Russia conflict in Armenia's integration
processes is not so strong as it is represented in reality.
