The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic situation in the NKR
is characterized by low infection level. Infection cases have been
recorded since 2000, as reported in the Healthcare Ministry website.
By the Ministry's data from 2000 to May 31, 2013, there were 30 HIV
infection cases recorded in the Republic, 13 of them being recorded
in 2012 which is the highest index as compared with the previous years.
The highest percentage /50%/ of HIV infection is recorded among
the male representatives, 40% among the females and 10% among the
children. The main ways of transmission of the HIV infection are
the heterosexual contact /60%/, drug injection /30%/, cases of HIV
transmission from mother to child form only 10 %.
As reported by the same source from 2000 to 2013 there were 3 HIV
infection cases with fatal end.
"All those infected through drug injection are males most of whom
temporarily lived and most probably were infected in the RF. Besides,
30 % of all the HIV infected male representatives use drug injection
while all the women were infected by sexual contact," the website
notes.
The largest percentage of HIV infection /60%/ turns out to be recorded
among Stepanakert citizens. Next come the regions of Martakert and
Martouni with 3 cases recorded in each, 2 cases were recorded in
Askeran and 1 in Hadrout.
The average number of HIV infection cases in the NKR is 20,4 per
