SENSATION IN KARABAKH RESOLUTION
Azerbaijan has made a sensational statement which may change a lot in
the philosophy of Karabakh resolution. Azerbaijan may supply gas to
Armenia, stated the president of the Azerbaijani oil company Rovnag
Abdullayev in an interview with ANS TV.
The statement is notable in the context of the Azerbaijani foreign
minister Elmar Mammedyarov's speech during his meeting with John
Kerry. "One of the biggest problems of the conflict resolution with
the neighbor Armenia, with whom we are definitely and desperately
interested to live in peace with dignity, always that there will be
all the negative outcome of the conflict will be in the past, and we
will look to the bright future of successful cooperation and living
next to each other as a good neighborhood," said Mammedyarov.
Notably, Ilham Aliyev has refused a meeting with the president of
Armenia. Apparently, the meeting was not needed, and transformation
of resolution will be staged at a lower level.
Over the past few years the western community has been promoting
normalization without improvement of relations covering not only
the Karabakh conflict but also normalization of the Armenian-Turkish
relations. The international community has been trying to persuade
Turkey and Azerbaijan to lift the blockade on Armenia and regional
communications but Baku and Ankara stipulate return of some lands.
Apparently, both Armenia and the West are against return.
Judging by the statement of the Russian foreign minister, Russia
supports the "lifting of blockade - return of land" resolution. Lavrov
said that the status quo does not allow resolving these issues.
Apparently, Aliyev and Sargsyan were going to speak about it on
Moscow's initiative.
However, rhetoric has changed after the visit of the foreign
ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan to the United States. First,
it was stated that there will be no meeting of president. Second,
Azerbaijan mentioned gas supply for the first time. It may mean that
the West has approved the "lifting of blockade - return of land"
resolution or has persuaded Turkey and Azerbaijan that there is no
resolution, only lifting of blockade.
The second seems more probably against the developments in Turkey
and likelihood of similar developments in Azerbaijan. Both countries
expect elections, and they need the support of the West, considering
that the United States is not hiding its support to demonstrators in
Istanbul. Besides, 2015 is fast approaching, and already the fourth
state of the United States has recognized the independence of NKR.
So, there may be a breakthrough in the Karabakh resolution. And it
is only the preamble of the tough rhetoric of Aliyev and Sargsyan.
