ARMENIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS PROPOSES HEARING ON MARCH 1 EVENTS

At the Parliament's sitting on Tuesday, Gagik Jhangiryan, an MP from
the Armenian National Congress (ANC) party, addressed the bill on
an ad hoc committee on the March 1 2008 events, which was drafted by
the ANC parliamentary group and rejected by the parliamentary majority.
"However, the ad hoc committee did not close the issue. Moreover,
torpedoing the initiative caused additional political, psychological
and legal problems over the March 1 issue," he said.
Even if the victims' relatives hoped to see the murderers punished
due to the bill, they were disappointed, Jhangiryan added.
Armenia's society has been confirmed in the opinion about impunity
of murderers and sponsorship of law-enforcement agencies' criminal
failure.
The ANC will use all the legal means to get the March 1 crimes solved
and murderers punished - both inside Armenia and at international
organizations.
The ANC parliamentary group proposes that Armenian Parliament Speaker
Hovik Abrahamyan organize hearings on the legality of measures taken
by Armenia's law-enforcement agencies since the tragic events.
"We agree to hearings behind closed doors. We hope that the hearings
will make the political majority change its mind on our initiative,"
Jhangiryan said.
