ARMENIA CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOLAR ENERGY: EXPERT
YEREVAN, June 11. /ARKA/. Armenia with 80% annul average of solar
illumination has excellent conditions for using solar energy, a
renewable energy expert Hayk Shekyan said Monday.
According to the expert, solar energy is the most promising renewable
energy source in Armenia with an average of 1,700kilowatt solar
energy per square meter. This level is even higher in some places,
in Sevan basin in particular (2,400 kilowatt), Shekyan said.
For comparison, average European level is 1,000-1,100 kilowatt per
sq. meter.
"Yet, even the Northern European countries are using the solar energy,
whereas we are not", Shekyan told reporters.
The expert stressed the solar energy is paying back quicker than the
other sources. For instance, water heaters using solar batteries are
the most efficient ones: their technology is quite simple and they
have a higher efficiency factor, Shekyan said.
Installation of a solar water heater will cost a five-person
family some 300,000 drams (50 liters per person as per the European
standards), he said adding that funds may be obtained from loans
and leasing.
South-oriented private houses and the last floors of multi-apartment
blocks have the best conditions for solar installations.
"But if the apartment is located on the second floor of a nine-floor
apartment block, then the water will cool down while going through
the pipes, and solar installations are not worthy in this case",
Shekyan said.
The expert also said that gas supplies could be used together with
solar energy, particularly on overcast days. This way gas consumption
will be reduced considerably, he said.
Shekyan also recommended residents to pay special attention to thermal
insulation of the walls, which will provide more than 20% saving. -0-
