ARMENIAN ENERGY MINISTRY FINDS IRAN'S OFFER TO INCREASE GAS EXPORT TO ARMENIA INTERESTING

YEREVAN, June 11. /ARKA/. On Tuesday, Armenian Deputy Energy and
Natural Resources Minister Areg Galstyan, commenting on Iranian
Ambassador Mohammad Raiesi's statement about his country's readiness
to enlarge supply of Iranian natural gas to Armenia, said that the
    matter deserves consideration.

"This is an interesting idea," he said. "We have a program for long
years. We receive gas in exchange of electric energy. And this project
    is beneficial to both parties."

In 2004, the Armenian government initiated construction of Iran-Armenia
    gas pipeline.

The pipeline started operating in 2007. Armenia uses Iranian gas for
generating electric power, which is sent to Iran - 3kilowatt/hour
for 1 cubic meter of natural gas. Under the agreement, Iran will send
36 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Armenia for 20 years. The
terms of the agreement can be prolonged for five years and gas import
can be increased to 47 billion cubic meters.

Galstyan said that under the contract, Armenia can enlarge volumes
of the gas imported from Iran, if it needs more gas.

He refrained from commenting on the price for Iranian natural gas.

"There is an offer and it should be considered," he said.

Asked whether Armenia will manage to decide how much Iranian gas
is an alternative to Russian gas, the deputy minister said that
this is a very difficult question. "But any case, the more sources,
directions and options of fuel supply a country has, the more the
country is safe," he said. "If we have to choose, we'll prefer what
is more beneficial to us strategically, politically and economically."

ArmRosgazprom CJSC, established in 1997, enjoys the sole right for
importing and distributing Russian natural gas in Armenia. Russia
conveys its gas to Armenia through Georgia. The company's shareholders
are Russia's Gazprom and the Armenian government.

In May, Armenian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Armen Movsisyan
said the Iranian gas can't be an alternative to Russian gas for
    Armenia. -0- 11:19 12.06.2013
