ARMENIAN EXPERT COMMENTS ON GAZPROM'S STEPS

The sale of the Armenian government's share in ArmRusgapsrom to
Gazprom means that Armenia is losing the economic basis of its
state independence, Hmayak Hovhannisyan, Chairman of the Political
Scientists' Union of Armenia, told Tert.am.
"They are scattering more and more in all directions - in the relations
with both Russia and the European Union," he said.
"Russia is pursuing its commercial interests. It has repeatedly been
stated that either fraternity or an approach based on the well-known
principle 'no everlasting friend, no perpetual enemies, but perpetual
interests'," Hovhannisyan said.
"It is an attempt to cushion social consequences of the gas price
rise in the current grace socio-economic situation," he said.
With respect to Armenia's "losing the economic basis" of its state
independence, Hovhannisyan said that Armenia's mining industry is
developing due to export of raw materials.
He recently voiced the opinion that, at the last moment, Armenia will
refuse to initial an association agreement with the EU.
According to Hovhannisyan, one of the reasons is that Russia is
toughening its position.
