ARMENIAN RULING PARTY REP. PRAISES OPPOSITION'S CONDUCT IN PARLIAMENT

A senior parliamentarian of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia
(RPA) says he is all in all satisfied with the National Assembly's
latest session despite the fact that the majority MPs often had to
rely on their own resources while passing a bill.
Speaking to Tert.am, the head of the RPA faction in parliament,
Galust Sahakyan, noted that the opposition's somewhat passive
conduct is even praiseworthy as they did not unduly interfere in
the legislative process to make objections the bills proposed by the
parliamentary majority.
"I find such a conduct by the opposition very positive because [an
objection] - whenever it isn't an end in itself, making them critical
of any bill - makes legislative work more active," he explained.
The politician noted that the opposition this time more focused on
legislative initiatives rather than political comments. "But at the
same time, the opposition guides itself with political comments more
than with legislative work," he said.
Sahakyan said further that Prosperous Armenia, which was formerly in
the ruling coalition, has its own strategy as an alternative political
force. "Which [the party's leader] Gagik Tsarukyan made public weeks
ago. I don't find any party likely to demonstrate a biased approach
to either the authorities or the opposition," he said, adding that the
opposition seeks ways to benefit from ruling force's political capital.
Commenting on the spring session, Armen Roustamyan of the opposition
Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaksutyun (ARF-D) said it saw
lots of changes.
"The opposition attempted to take a full advantage of the competences
vested in it by the Rules of Procedure. The key problem is the Budget
report, as well as the Government program of which we expressed our
concerns and opinions. The government won't change despite their
earlier concern over the existing socio-economic hardships," he noted.
Roustamyan added that their parliamentary faction carried out its work
based on the seven-clause platform which had been made public ahead
of the presidential polls. "There were legal initiatives and reforms
proposed in that connection. Some of them were approved, others were
rejected," the opposition MP said, considering the privileges granted
to university entrants from border regions one of their important
proposals receiving an approval.
Rustamyan stressed the need of serious systemic reforms, considering
them the only solution to the existing crisis.
