THE LONGEST SERVING MINISTER COMES OUT OF SHADOW
Minister of energy and natural resources of Armenia Armen Movsisyan
told the Russian Regnum that if Armenia joins the Customs Union,
gas and uranium for the Nuclear Power Plant will be imported at a
cheaper price. Armen Movsisyan said that Armenia is an independent
state and it is up to it to decide whether to enter the Customs Union
or not. At the same time, he said that trade with Russia as compared
with other states suggests that it would be beneficial for Armenia
to join the Customs Union.
Armen Movsisyan is negotiating with Gazprom the sale of the
government's 20% stake at ARG to Russia. Most probably, Movsisyan's
statements are the result of these talks. The minister of energy has
become the advertising agent of the Customs Union.
Here is an interesting situation. Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan
argued impossibility of Armenia's membership with the Customs Union
in one of his interviews with the Russian newspaper. Now the Armenian
minister suggests that entering the Customs Union will provide Armenia
with cheaper gas and uranium, and other economic benefits.
Has the government of Armenia changed its approaches, or does the
prime minister support one approach, and the minister another?
This issue really exists in Armenia. It is not accidental that in
commenting on the revelations by the Control Chamber the prime minister
called on the ministers not to be silent and to answer the allegations
against the government. In other words, Tigran Sargsyan asked the
ministers if they are with him or not? This question has a larger
political context rather than revelations of the Control Chamber.
The prime minister actually hinted that there is a problem of common
approaches and responsibility within the government. Different opinions
on the Customs Union are the proof.
The minister of energy is the one who plays computer games at work
but he is not an ordinary one because an ordinary one would not have
held the same post for 12 years, especially in such a sphere as energy.
Movsisyan is the longest serving minister of Armenia of all times.
During his office a number of incidents make the society doubt
corruption and Minister Movsisyan could be at least a witness.
In this regard, it may not be accidental that the mission to divide
the government of Armenia is tasked to Movsisyan. This mission is
supposed to be assumed by someone who knows much, and about whom the
others know much.
