Naregatsi Art Institute organized the first Naregatsi Festival of the
Arts from June 15-22 at the Komitas Chamber Music Hall. For eight
consecutive days, spiritual, classical, academic, folk and jazz
concerts were performed by renowned Armenian singers and
musicians. The festival was also accompanied by the exhibition of
paintings by famous Armenian artists (Hagop Hagopian, Vartan
Tovmasian, Shota Voskanian, Armen Khojoyan, Tigran Asatrian, Ashot
Avagian, Sevan Naccashian, Hovnan Sarkisian, Yevgine
Martirosyan). Also NAI founder Nareg Hartounian presented his
`Photaura' style of photography.
The Naregatsi Art Festival kicked off with a concert by the
international award-winning Gurdjieff Folk Instruments Ensemble, which
was was followed with a joint concert by the Luys Quintet and Oshakan
Trio performing Armenian medieval and folk songs, works by
contemporary composers and songs arranged by Komitas.
On June 18th, the State Chamber Choir of Armenia conducted by Artistic
Director, Robert Mlkeyan (Artist Honorarium of Armenia) presented the
works of modern Armenian composers, Tigran Mansurian, David Haladjian,
and Edward Hairapetian.
On June 19th, composer, pianist Artur Avanesov, Astghik Vardanyan
(violin), Mary Dolmazyan (alt), and Levon Araqelyan (cello) performed
chamber compositions written by A. Khachatryan, Gh. Saryan,
T. Mansurian, A. Avanesov, D. Balasanyan, and H. Sardaryan.
On June 20th, the concert of jazz musicians composer, pianist Vahagn
Hayrapetyan and saxophonist, flutist, composer Armen Hyusnunts was
held featuring jazz improvisations.
On June 21st, composer, songwriter Vahan Artsruni confessed that the
last performance he had given at the Komitas Chamber Music Hall was
nearly a decade ago and that this festival had given him the great
opportunity to perform there once again and communicate with his
audience. He presented "Komitas: 10 Revelations', a
vocal-instrumental cycle based on poetry of Vardapet Komitas and
Razmik Davoyan.
The festival ended on June 22nd with performances by the Naregatsi
Folk Instruments Ensemble and the Karin Song & Dance Ensemble, who
brought the audience to their feet and danced various ethnic Armenian
dances.
Symbolic Naregatsi Art institute cross-stones were handed to all the
participants of the festival, which was organized by Naregatsi Art
Institute and Melos LLC, in collaboration with some of the most
accomplished performers and visual artists in Armenia. The underlying
goal of the festival was to present authentic Armenian culture and
allow artistic expression to flourish free from financial, legal and
administrative concerns.
`Our intention is to make the Naregatsi Art Festival an annual event
and include not only Armenia but also tie in the Diaspora', concluded
