By a decision of the United Nations Organisation, June 26 has bee
celebrated as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit
Trafficking since 1987.
The number of drug-abusers in Armenia exceeds 12 700 according to
a survey conducted in 2011. About 4332 drug-users are registered in
the Narco-Clinical Center in Armenia. Fifty-five of them are women.
"The number of drug-abusers is increasing in the world. Only Sweden
has managed to stop the growth while in Iran the number of drug
addicts totals 3 million," says Petros Semerjyan, the director of
the Narco-Clinical Center.
While the specialist says this is a painful phenomenon he hurries to
comfort everyone saying that the number of drug users is much greater
in the neighbouring countries.
"There are about 400 000 drug addicts in Georgia," he said.
Speaking about the prevention and proper treatment of drug addiction,
Mr Semerjyan said, "President has issued a decree that all government
departments should provide appropriate guidance and pay special
attention to the problem. Anyway, drug addiction is a matter of
personal transformation," he said.
