ARMENIAN PM NOT TO RESIGN OVER OFFSHORE SCANDAL, SAYS OPPOSITIONIST

Zoya Tadevosyan of the opposition Armenian National Congress says
that the scandalous reports about off-shore businesses linked to
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan's name are not likely to cause him to
step down.
Commenting on the latest reports published by the investigative
journalists' website Hetq.am, the oppositionist said that the scenario
would be believable had such a story discredited officials in any
other country.
"They say what is done by night appears by day. It had to be resolved
one day, so there is nothing surprising about that," she told Tert.am,
comparing the prime minister's image with an "economic tsunami".
Hetq.am's first report revealing scandalous facts about offshore
businesses owned by the premier, and two other individuals - the
prelate of the Armenian Apostolic Church Ararat Diocese, Archbishop
Navasard Kjoyan and businessman Ashot Sukiasyan - were published in
late May.
Both Sargsyan and the archbishop later denied the scandalous story.
Tadevosyan, who is an economist, noted that conducting registrations
and making investments in different offshore companies is considered
legal whenever the owner admits that he or she acted within the law,
and justifies the objectives of founding the enterprise.
"The prime minister refuses in the present circumstances to even turn
to the Prosecutor's Office to prove that he had absolutely nothing
to do with the enterprise founding process," she said, considering
Sargsyan's passiveness somewhat absurd. "I don't think a government
official having a little bit sense of dignity would have permitted
himself to do such a thing. As for his [possible] resignation, that's
abuse of power on the state level which can be considered a crime
under any circumstances," she added.
