SOUTH CAUCASUS NOT PROPER REGION FOR BARGAINING - EXPERT

    20:18 ~U 27.06.13

The South Caucasus is not the kind of region to allow countries like
Russia to pursue pure business interests, an Armenian analyst has said,
considering Russia's large-scale weapons' sale deal with Azerbaijan
    a well-arranged plan.

"Russia made the step intentionally, and it well has motives to do
so," Manvel Sargsyan, an expert of the Armenian Center for National
and International Studies, told a news conference on Thursday.

The expert noted that the country chose to implement the project in
phases, having planned in advance to sell S300 missiles, helicopters
and other military equipment to Azerbaijan.

At the second strategic political forum devoted to the political
security aspects of the Collective Security Treaty Organization's
military component, the Organization's secretary general, Nikolay
Borduzha, said the sale of $1 billion worth weapons to Azerbaijan is
just a business deal which Russia had earlier concluded with scores
    of other countries.

Commenting on the statement, Sargsyan said he cannot but agree to the
Russian analysts' remarks that Azerbaijan would purchase weapons from
a third country hadn't it been for the agreement with Russia.

Asked whether he feels that the circle around Armenia is getting
tigher, with Russia and the West pressing ahead with their requirements
for intergration, the expert answered that he really sees a dilemma.

It comes after Polish President Bronislaw Komarowski said at a news
conference with Serzh Sargsyan that Armenia has to finally decide
whether it wishes to join the European Union and the Eurasian Union.

"Yes, such statements are really made, they do often impose dilemmas.

I don't know how the Armenian authorities treat that or whether they
are able to realize why questions are put forward in such an abrupt
manner. There are, after all, reasons for that," Sargsyan added.
