TURKISH POLITICAL SCIENTIST: UNSTOPPABLE PROCESSES STARTED IN TURKEY
Mert Kayhan, Turkish postgraduate research student at the Department
of Politics and International Relations of Royal Holloway University
of London, spoke during today's conference in Yerevan entitled
"Geopolitics in South Caucasus and Armenian-Turkish relations" about
three important issues: the changing concept of security, Gezi movement
and the important role of the civil society in shifting from citizen's
security to individual.
Dwelling on Gezi movement, he said that if the society lives in a state
where it does not believe its mass media, its activities are boosted
by Facebook and Twitter, which the government is unable to change.
He said that the process of democratization is like standing on a
moving bike: you are likely to fall. This is happening in Turkey now.
These movements began with the 2002 processes of democratization in
Turkey and can't be stopped now, says Mert Kayhan.
He said that it is wrong to compare the Gezi movement with the Arab
spring because Turkish youths are not up for toppling the government,
they are not protesting against the institutional order, they don't
want to enlarge the limits of legitimate government, which the Turkish
government is unable to understand. He says that the minister of
internal affairs of Turkey met with the youths and proposed to set
up a youth party to boost the establishment of democracy in Turkey
which means that they misinterpreted the movement, he says.
According to him, those, who are fighting for Gezi Park, want to
establish the human rights in Turkey. The Turkish political scientist
noted that once the process of democratization starts it cannot be
stopped, and it started in the Caucasus and the Caucasian countries
should take this into account.
