Access to Facebook messenger to become free in 14 countries: Armenia
    not among them

YEREVAN, March 4. / ARKA /. Facebook said last week that it had
partnered with more than a dozen mobile carriers to offer users cheap
and seamless access to its smartphone messaging service.

The deal, struck between Facebook and 18 mobile carriers and being
deployed in 14 countries (Armenia is not among them) to start, offers
users of the social network free or discounted access to mobile data
in order to run the Facebook messenger mobile application without
affecting their overall amount of cellular data allotted monthly.

Facebook said in a statement that the discounted feature will become
available `in the coming months' for its messenger app powered by
Google's Android and iOS phones as well as the `Facebook for Every
Phone' app developed for feature phones, which are also known less
politely as `dumb phones.' Facebook did not say if it had plans to
extend this discount to other mobile operating systems such as
Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 or Blackberry.

The mobile carriers with which Facebook signed contracts include the
Three in Ireland, Smart in the Philippines, Oi in Brazil, Airtel and
Reliance in India, Tre in Italy, four national operators in
    Indonesia and others.

ARKA news agency tried to find out if Armenian mobile operators were
seeking to sign similar agreements with Facebook.

Anush Beglarian, a press officer for ArmenTel (trading as Beeline)
said this issue is the prerogative of its parent company Russian
VimpelCom. "If there is news, we will inform the public", she said.
Orange Armenia spokesperson Lilit Martirosyan said its postpaid
subscribers have been using apecial tariff plan "Panther", which
provides access from mobile devices to Facebook, Twitter, Vkontakte,
    Odnoklassniki, Orangeblog. am.

"For prepaid subscribers we have special low prices as part of Orange
1 tariff plan," she added. ARKA failed to get a comment from mobile
    operator VivaCell - MTS.

According to data of Socialbakers.com, some 395,340 users in Armenia
were subscribed to Facebook. They made 13.32% of the total population.
