ZHOGHOVURD: MAN DETAINED OVER EX-CANDIDATE'S DEATH ATTEMPT INNOCENT, CLAIMS MOTHER

The mother of Samvel Harutyunyan, the man detained over the
assassination attempt against former presidential candidate Paruyr
Hayrikyan, has claimed her son has nothing to do with the incident.
Speaking to the Zhoghovurd daily, Roza Galstyan said she doesn't
think anyone is to blame for the detention as Harutyunyan did not
have any enemies.
"I know only one thing - my son has nothing to do with all this. It
might be somebody's handwriting. I have no idea who that person is,
and have even no doubt," she was quoted as saying.
The paper notes that the relatives of the other suspects detained
over the case had earlier said that Vardan Sedrakyan, another former
candidate better known to the public as an expert in epics, is the
mastermind of the plot. The investigation is now conducted by the
National Security Service's Investigative Service, which Hayrikyan
believes "lacks independence", the paper adds.
