Armenian environmentalists keep alarming of the illegal sale of birds
included in the Red Book.
Silva Adamyan, Head of Bird Fans Center NGO, told ArmInfo the uncommon
birds are sold under the counter. For instance, she said, such species
as peregrine or griffon are sold for $10,000 in the local black
market. Adamyan said that privates and not an organized underground
network are behind the sale of the birds included in the Red Book.
"Hunting wild birds is not an easy task. One should know where they
inhabit and keep in contact with hunters. In addition, one should know
what's what. It is not so easy to differentiate birds on the wing,"
the expert said.
Last year, environmentalists were alarming that uncommon birds are
sold in the local Bird Market. Adamyan said the problem of open sale
of such species has been settled in the country. There customs control
on the boundary has been toughened as well, Adamyan said. Earlier,
experts reported on export of wild birds from Armenia for up to 50,000
EUR per bird.
