Former opposition candidate Raffi Hovhannisian's meeting with the
residents of Sevan (Gegharkunik region) was not without an incident.
The town's mayor, Rudik Ghukasyan, who had attended the gathering on
Saturday afternoon, offered the opposition Heritage party's leader to
negotiate with the re-elected president and admit the latter's victory
in the February 18 election.
He said the people backing the politician are misguiding the country.
But the former candidate insisted on his earlier remark that Serzh
Sargsyan's success in the presidential election was due to his
administrative resources.
`I have come here to say hello, not to hold a debate. The March 1
[meaning deadly protests and clashes following the 2008 presidential
election] is over, and I will not allow a single drop of blood to flow
. But if you want no more drop of blood, then we together must accept
the people's victory,' he said, adding that he will not be guilty of
any tensions, in case they break out.
`It's not me, Mr Mayor, who has brought the tension. The Armenian
nation is not on the wrong track. You too, can live in such a
fairytale, I have no doubt. But if you say Sargsyan was elected, then
you distorted the people's,' he said, addressing the mayor.
