MARTUNI. - An incident transpired Saturday while Armenia's opposition
Heritage Party Chairman, former FM Raffi Hovannisian - who is declared
runner-up to the winner, incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, as a
result of the presidential election that was conducted on February 18,
but who claims to be the real winner in the vote - was addressing the
people during his rally in Martuni city of Gegharkunik Region.
When Heritage's vice-chairman Ruben Hakobyan was speaking about
Armenia's `internal Turks,' a resident yelled and moved toward
Hovannisian and Hakobyan.
`You yourselves are Turks! Shame on You! During the Soviet times there
was no Azerbaijanis in our region. Look for Turks in your parliament!'
he said.
Subsequently, a public argument started with this person, and it was
threatening to turn into a fight. Hovannisian, however, separated the
arguing parties.
`They are sending provocateurs to our assemblies. Don't succumb to
provocations! We will not permit this task to be fulfilled,' he said.
The police escorted the angry person away from those that had gathered.
In response to our request to introduce himself, this individual noted
that he is a Karabakh war veteran, and that is why he could not
forgive the words that were spoken about the Turks.
