Armenia's accession to the CIS Customs Union may cause some problems
with the European integration process, Under Secretary of the British
Foreign and Commonwealth Office Simon Fraser said at a briefing in
Yerevan on Monday.
He said that Armenia and the EU are still negotiating on the Deep and
Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and Associated Agreement. Great
Britain encourages Armenia to develop relations with the European
Union. Fraser thinks that Armenia seeks to establish closer cooperation
with Europe and he respects Armenia's deep relations with Russia. He
thinks that these are not mutually exclusive things but some problems
with the Customs Union may arise in this context.
Earlier Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said that Armenia
was not going to join the CIS Customs Union for a number of impartial
reasons. One of the reasons is that Armenia lacks common borders with
the Customs Union member countries.
The decision on creation of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and
Kazakhstan was made in August 2006 during the informal summit of the
Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC).
