Singer Shushan Petrosyan, a lawmaker with the ruling Republican Party
of Armenia (RPA), who has been on fire over her controversial remarks
about last month~Rs presidential election, has postponed her concert
in Gyumri that was originally scheduled for March 13 to avoid clashes.
During a televised talk show earlier this month Petrosyan accused
Gyumri residents of being dishonest. She hinted that voters in the
second largest city of Armenia should have voted for the candidate they
had taken bribes for instead of casting their votes to the opposition.
Opposition leader Raffi Hovannisian garnered a nearly 70 percent
support among Gyumri residents in the February 18 ballot, as opposed
to only 27 percent won by incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, the
leader of the RPA.
The comment made during a prime-time television show on Kentron
TV caused a great controversy on Facebook and other online social
networking sites, with most people condemning such behavior.
~SIt is not my problem. I would not like clashes, no matter ten people
or more attend my concerts,~T Petrosyan told Tert.am.
~SI know 13 people plan a meeting for tomorrow. I think clashes are
inevitable with such public sentiments. So I should postpone the
concert until people are more tranquil,~T the singer said.
A civil movement in Gyumri was reportedly going to hold a protest
against Petrosyan~Rs concert in Armenia~Rs second largest city on
Wednesday.
This is not the first time Petrosyan cancels a public event. Last
Friday she refused, at the last moment, to be a guest of a popular
Facebook conference with RFE/RL~Rs Armenian Service. It was not clear
whether she made the decision in view of the multitude of questions
sent in by Facebook users regarding her controversial statement.
