ARMENIA'S CONSTITUTIONAL COURT REJECTS APPEAL BY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES CONTESTING ELECTION

YEREVAN, Armenia - Armenia's constitutional court has rejected an
appeal by two presidential candidates to annul last month's vote won
    by the incumbent.

The court on Thursday upheld the results of the Feb. 18 election,
in which President Serge Sarkisian easily won a second five-year term
with nearly 59 per cent of the vote. American-born Raffi Hovanessian,
who finished second with 37 per cent, and Andrias Gukasian, who won
less than 1 per cent of the vote, contested the outcome last week.

Hovanessian, Armenia's first foreign minister after the 1991 collapse
of the Soviet Union, called the election rigged and declared himself
the genuine winner. He has gone on a hunger strike demanding that
    Sarkisian step down.

International monitors said the election "lacked competition" but
did not question the legitimacy of Sarkisian's win.
