ARMENIAN COMMUNITY CAUSES TENSIONS IN GEORGIA

The Armenian community of Georgia has demanded ratification of the
European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages Georgia signed in
1999. President Mikheil Saakashvili says that the charter threatens
national security, Georgia Online reports.
Urges to ratify the charter were heard in the Akhalkalaki District
of the Samtskhe-Javakheti Province, as stated by Hamlet Movsesyan,
speaker of the local parliament.
He admitted that the initiative belonged to the Georgian Dream
coalition of Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Georgian State Minister for Reintegration Paata Zakareishvili said
that Saakashvili had been lobbying passing of the charter in 1999.
