    ** TOP STORY March 22, 2013
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    Palm Sunday

** Palm Sunday and Holy Week
    ------------------------------------------------------------

On March 24, Armenian Churches worldwide will observe Palm Sunday, the
feast of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. On this day the
altar curtain, which remains closed in the Armenian Church during
Great Lent, will be re-opened with the special Turen-Patzek
    (door-opening) service.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week-the sacred commemoration
of the dramatic events leading to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ,
his victory over death, and the redemption of humanity and the fallen
world. The Armenian Church re-enacts these episodes in the days
    leading up to Easter.

    ** Primate's Easter Message
    ------------------------------------------------------------

In this year's Easter message, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan
Primate, reflects on Christ's final command, known as the Great
Commission, which marked a turning point in the activity of the early
    Christians.

Previously, Jesus and his followers had never ventured more than a
hundred miles from the place of Christ's birth. But now the disciples
were commanded to travel the world, spreading the Good News to all
nations. The `disciples'-followers and students of Jesus=80'would
become `apostles': teachers, advocates, and living examples who would
bring Christ's message-and Christ himself-to the rest of the world.

They forged the church as the vessel which would transmit the Gospel
message down through the ages. And through it, we too have been given
the opportunity to stand alongside those early followers of our
Lord. This is especially true of the profound drama we enter every
year during the church's sacred observance of Holy Week. From Holy
Thursday through Easter Sunday, each service leads us, in heart and
mind, to stand among Jesus and his disciples.

** Ancient Art Provides Creative Outlet for Kids in Need
    ------------------------------------------------------------

For 15 years now, children at the Gavar Orphanage in Armenia have been
learning the ancient Armenian art of carpet weaving, as part of a
special club that offers young people a creative outlet while teaching
    them a valuable skill.

Last month, the carpet-weaving club was grateful to receive 33 pounds
of high-quality threads of wool and cotton from the New York-based
    Megerian Rugs
    (http://www.megerianrugs.com/?utm_source=Eastern+Diocese+E-Newsletter&utm_campaign=8c54b6b7c1-February_9_20122_9_2012&utm_medium=email)
company. The company made the generous donation after being contacted
by the Fund for Armenian Relief to help replenish the club's stock of
    colored threads.

The Gavar Orphanage, a state-run institution located in the center of
Armenia's Gegharkunik region, houses some 100 children, ages
3-18. Many of its beneficiaries receive support through various
programs run by the Fund for Armenian Relief. Rugs made by children at
the orphanage are sold, with proceeds going directly to the children
and to the purchase of new materials. The orphanage also displays the
    rugs at exhibitions and fairs.

** ACYOA Juniors Wrap Up Retreat Season
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Last weekend, close to 20 teens represented six parishes from
Wisconsin and Illinois at the ACYOA Juniors retreat in Ingleside,
IL. The retreat was held at the home of Hye Camp at Camp
Hickory. Throughout the weekend the participants were encouraged to
think about how they can share the light of Christ in their everyday
    lives.

Jennifer Morris, the Diocese's Youth Outreach coordinator, led the
retreat sessions. The Rev. Fr. Yeprem Kelegian, pastor of St. Mesrob
Church of Racine, WI, joined the group on Friday to lead the evening
service, Saturday's morning service, and Bible study.

The last session of the retreat focused on prayer, and the teens had
an opportunity to write their own prayers and to share them during a
candlelight service, which was led by the Very Rev. Fr. Aren Jebejian,
pastor of St. Gregory the Illuminator Church of Chicago, IL.

On Sunday morning, the group traveled to St. George Church of
Waukegan, IL, where the Rev. Fr. Paren Galustyan, parish pastor,
celebrated the Divine Liturgy. Local community member Mark Paparigian
hosted the young people for lunch at his facility, the People's Choice
    Family Fun Center. Click here
