ARMENIA'S GOVERNMENT TO INJECT AMD 185 MLN INTO MODERNIZING BYURAKAN OBSERVATORY
YEREVAN, March 26. /ARKA/. Armenian government will plow 185 million
drams into modernization of Byurakan observatory in 2013 versus 65
million of the last year, Director of Observatory Hayk Harutyunyan
told reporters on Tuesday.
"The funds will be injected into modernizing the dome of the
observatory, the large telescope and the repair of vacuum equipment,"
he noted.
Harutyunyan said 100 million drams is anticipated for repairing the
large telescope (2.6 meter-diameter).
"We have already kicked off restoring the telescope mirror, which
hasn't been aluminized since the 80s," he added.
Harutyunyan also clarified the modernization program was launched in
August 2012 and will be completed at the end of this year.
He also said the program is implemented in association with Keldysh
Institute of Applied Mathematics (Russian Academy of Sciences) and
Project-Technology center.
Harutyunyan highlighted the importance of cooperation, particularly,
in tracking near-Earth satellites of up to 6,000 tons, space debris
surveillance and prevention of asteroid and comet hazards.
Within the frames of the cooperation, the construction of a new
station is launched. Russian telescopes will be installed there.
Besides, according to Harutyunyan, some special transducers, which
increase the power, will be installed on the local telescopes.
He also noted the modernization of Byurakan Observatory may put it
forward in competing on the international arena, and young people
will have a motivation to research astrophysics.
The Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory after Viktor Hambardzumyan
(the observatory founder) was founded in 1946 on Mount Aragats at an
altitude of 1400 meters.
Armenia's government declared Byurakan Observatory as a national
