The Armenian government today has decided to allocate 20.5 million
drams (about $50,000) for treatment purposes to former presidential
candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan, who survived an assassination attempt
during the campaign earlier this year and now still suffers from
its consequences.
Doctors in Yerevan treating the 63-year-old Soviet-era dissident of a
gunshot wound in the collar bone had said his nervous system had been
affected and he needed a treatment that could only be administered
abroad.
Hayrikyan himself has complained of a continuing dysfunction of his
right arm and other complications caused by the wound.
A rival maverick candidate, Vardan Sedrakyan, was arrested earlier
this month on suspicion of masterminding the January 31 attack that
was allegedly carried out by two gunmen who are also in custody
pending investigation.
