POLICE TREAT CAMPAIGNS SELECTIVELY - OPPOSITIONIST

An Armenian opposition activist running for the Yerevan mayor says the
police have a selective approach to the political campaign and impose
restrictions on the parties whose policies do not seem palatable to
the government.
Speaking to Tert.am, the deputy leader of the Heritage party, Armen
Martirosyan noted that the police sanctioned a recent procession
by the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC), which was
absolutely law. But he said it isn't yet clear why their party is
facing restrictions in that regard.
"The strange thing here is that they ban another political force
from holding a procession. It is clear, to my mind, that the police
are annexed to the authorities, exercising their punitive functions,
which in this case applies to the political forces not agreeable to
the authorities," he said.
