A rally of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) originally
planned to be held in Yerevan's Liberty Square on late Friday afternoon
as an event closing the four-week campaign in the city elections
will not take place, reports RFE/RL's Armenian Service quoting an
RPA official.
Shushan Sardaryan, a spokesperson for the RPA election headquarters,
explained that the party's top candidate, incumbent mayor Taron
Margaryan has a busy schedule for today that includes five meetings
in different districts of Yerevan. Therefore, she said, holding a
rally was not "expedient".
All major participants in the May 5 elections, including the
opposition Armenian National Congress party, the Hello Yerevan
bloc, the Prosperous Armenia Party, have already staged their final
rallies earlier this week. The Armenian Revolutionary Federation
(Dashnaktsutyun) is planning to hold its closing event later today.
Saturday is officially declared a 'day of silence' before the vote.
