IRAN, ARMENIA TO COOPERATE AGAINST DRUG SMUGGLING: IRANIAN OFFICIAL

Iran's Prosecutor General Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i says the
Islamic Republic and Armenia have agreed to work together closely in
the fight against narcotics.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to cooperate with Armenia in
fighting illicit drugs," Mohseni-Eje'i told reporters on Wednesday.
He said a memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries
on Tuesday on legal and judicial issues would help develop closer
cooperation on combating narcotics.
The prosecutor general added that Iran has the capacities to curb
the smuggling of drugs from neighboring Afghanistan.
Armenia's Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan, for his part,
said Yerevan has been engaged in a relentless campaign against
narco-trafficking over the past few years.
With a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, Iran has been
used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics
kingpins in Europe.
The Islamic Republic has spent more than USD 700 million to seal the
borders and prevent the transit of narcotics destined for European,
Arab and Central Asian countries.
The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the
lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past 34 years.
