Russian expert warns of Armenian-Azeri war in Karabakh
Moscow, 2 April: "One of the foremost reasons for the cooling of the
Russian-Azerbaijani relations is Azerbaijan's wish to return the
Armenian-occupied territories through war," Geydar Dzhemal, head of
Russia's Islamic Committee, has voiced these ideas in an interview
with APA in Moscow.
He said that to date Russian-Azerbaijani relations have not been very
good. "Lately, relations became even cooler. The reasons have to do
with several factors. Thus, the USA wish to withdraw its troops from
Afghanistan via Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan's wish to liberate through war
Nagornyy Karabakh and adjacent districts that had been occupied by
Armenia and informal support that NATO and Israel lend to Azerbaijan
to this end have made relations colder. All these limit Moscow's
ability to influence the region, ties its hands, so to speak. And
prevents Moscow from defending militarily Armenia and the occupation
by Armenians of Azerbaijani territories," [he said].
Geydar Dzhemal said that the possibility of the resumption of the war
in near future is high: "The war in Nagornyy Karabakh may begin at any
moment. Azerbaijan sees that negotiations fail to yield any results
and wishes to liberate its lands from occupation through war."
Concerning the possibility that the act of terror in Boston was linked
to the US plans regarding the Caucasus, the political analyst said
that it is no coincidence that ethnic Chechen Tsarnayev brothers were
implicated in terrorism. "This act of terror was perpetrated by
professional operatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The
initial plan to blame this on Al-Qai'dah was thwarted. Obama did not
permit this. Later, the anti-Russian version was chosen. The version
of Chechen Tsarnayev brothers was implemented. The reasons for opting
for this version will become clear in near future," he said.
Dzhemal also commented on Azerbaijan-Iran relations. He said the tense
relations between the two countries were caused by close cooperation
of Azerbaijan with Israel. "Iran believes that close cooperation of
Azerbaijan with Israel is directly aimed against Iran," he said.
